In building your highly targeted, successful opt-in mailing list, there are ten quick and easy steps that you can use to take you on the fast track.
- Choose your target audience. This is also known as your niche market. You are not the only person competing for readers on the Internet, so be very clear who you want your target audience to be.
- Check that your target audience is actively viewing your kind of information online. For example, if you are creating a niche for active nonagenarians, you may not find a lot of them on the Internet. You may find a lot more of them in retirement communities, or you may not find that many of them at all.

- Don’t spend your time doing non-productive things. Spend most of your time where the money is. This also applies to your spending. Monitor your expenses carefully.
- Join forums and discussion boards that are beneficial to your niche and use them. Find your target market in the forums and discussion boards and solve their problems.
- Identify what your target niche’s problems are, then work out ways to fix them. People will pay you fix their problems.
- Ask your target niche about their problems, then help them solve them.
- Set up a mini-site on your target niche and solve one particular problem with a direct response system. Try Get Response.
- Offer incentives for your potential subscribers with giveaways like ebooks (you can find plenty of free giveaway books online, just search for them), special reports, mini-courses, coupons – whatever you can think of that is appropriate to your niche.
- Make sure you find every way you can to contact your target market. Don’t forget to find ways to contact them offline as well as online.
Opt-in list building without paying out money for lists is tedious work (even with paid lists it’s still work) but the results can be amazing. Building a good quality list takes time and effort, but keep at it and don’t give up. Each subscriber is a special find, a golden nugget, who will reward you if you take care of them and offer them the best information and deals you can.
Treat them with care and respect because the general rule of thumb amongst marketers on the Internet is that every targeted subscriber is profitable to you. Remember how much work it takes to get them and it will be easier to remember how well you need to treat them.
