One of the best ways to promote your website online is to have an opt-in mailing list. This is a database of names and email addresses of people who have subscribed to your email list via a form on your website. The best opt-in lists are called ‘double opt-in lists’ because the people must confirm an email sent the email account they specify on a form before they can become ‘active’ subscribers and you have permission to send them periodic emails on they topic in which they have expressed an interest.

These opt-in mailing lists also go by the name permission based email marketing.

There are a list of do’s and don’ts when you have or start an opt-in mailing list.

OPT-IN MAILING LIST – DO’S

  • Do put a subscription form on your website in a prominent place.
  • Do put a subscription form on every page of your website.
  • Do put a signature on all your regualr emails letting people know they can subscribe to your opt-in mailing list.
  • Do ensure you have full permission before adding someone to your mailing list. If they haven’t subscribed to your list of their own free will, you can be accused of SPAM and that means you can get your website shut down.
  • Do explain what the benefits are of people subscribing to your opt-in mailing list and let them know exactly what they can expect to receive and how often they can expect to get it.
  • Do contact your new subscriber as soon as you can (autoresponders can take care of this step for you perfectly.) Welcome your subscriber, remind them why they subscribed and what they can expect from you.

OPT-IN MAILING LIST DON’T'S

  • Don’t add contacts from your personal email account who have not chosen to opt-in to your mailing list for themselves.
  • Don’t purchase a list where you are not 110% certain that every one of the names are double opt-in subscribers.
  • Don’t ever abuse your subscribers trust. To do this is to ruin your reputation. Firstly they will ignore your marketing efforts and if you persist they may well start telling other people. News can spread like wildfire on the Internet.
