Beginners Guide To Blogging
The very first question that needs to be answered for the complete beginner to blogging, is what is it? Firstly, it’s a shortened name for web logging. Which is the art of writing articles, stories or updates for personal or business use to keep people informed and updated about what is happening.
Blogging began in the mid 90’s when web logging became popular in the Internet as a way to share more information with readers.
Unlike a website, which needs a domain name and a hosting service, blogging only requires a blog account. There are plenty to choose from on the Internet, popular ones being Google’s Blogger and Wordpress.
Bloggers are people who write blogs. Bloggers write blogs for various reasons, some for personal use, such as an online diary or personal journals and there are those who use blogs for more business like purposes and even to make money.
Business blogs are created to update customers and advertise products and services in order to increase sales. They are also used to create more awareness of a company’s existence online by creating useful articles targeted towards the company’s market.
There are several ways to make money online with a blog. You can syndicate it, by using an RSS feed and most blogs offer this option. Simply put, RSS is aggregated data on a topic or person which is then able to be offered to other websites so they can easily create content.
For an example of what an RSS feed looks like, see here.
The following points are things you need to consider when you are blogging for business or pleasure if you want lots of people to see your blog.
CONSIDER YOUR AUDIENCE
No matter who you are blogging for, unless it is purely a personal pursuit and you don’t want readers (which is not usually the purpose of a blog), then you need to consider the audience you are writing for. Most people want readers to know about them, so you need to write something that your audience can understand or possibly relate to.
CREATE BENEFITS FOR YOUR READERS TO COME AND READ
Just because you can write almost anything, doesn’t mean you should. You really are writing to interest or inform your readers, so write something beneficial to them.
Do you have a new product or service your readers could benefit from, or are there products and services your existing customers might not even know you have?
- Are you holding a sale or special?
- Have you updated something on your site?
- Has something happened in your business lately?
- Or has something happened in your target market (also known as a niche).
If you are blogging purely for personal purposes, you can write quirky blogs, purely for entertainment if you want..
REMEMBER THE KISS PRINCIPAL – KEEP IT SIMPLE, SEE?
Blogs are informational and informative and not normally technical. If you have a lot of technical specifications or information about a product, then put that in a downloadable PDF, or another place on your website and link to it in your blog instead.
Keep in mind that people are skimmers when it comes to reading, so keep you blog broken up and easy to read if it’s over a few hundred words, or consider breaking it into parts. Other wise, keep it short.
CREATE INTEREACTIVITY
Add audio or video to you blog to allow your readers to interact more with you. Allow feedback so people can communicate with you. If you have a personal blog, you may find yourself making new friends and with a business blog, you may find yourself making some very warm leads for the future.
REGULAR UPDATES ARE IMPORTANT
It’s expected that if you’re going to go to the effort of creating a blog, that you are going to update it often. For many bloggers, this is once a day or more. For others it’s weekly or a little less. It is important that you do update it regularly though, because blogs are about new, fresh content.
If you’re not going to be updating regularly, then blogging isn’t the way for you to go. Your readers want new information on a very regular basis.
So as a newbie to the world of blogging, you now know some important things to start off your own blog. Work out your market and then blog with your market in mind. Keep your blog updated regularly. keep it interesting with pictures, audio and video where appropriate and allow readers to comment.
