Search engine optimization or SEO is the art of creating web site pages that are “optimized” for the search engines. While this might sound very difficult, it really isn’t as hard as the experts would have you believe.
Most people searching online have little or no idea that search engine optimization even exists. They type their keywords into their favourite search engines and see all the results come up. How those results are chosen by the search engines is SEO. How one page rates higher than another is usually because of long hours of writing and testing, changing and re-testing by the website owners and companies with the sites.
For a website owner, good search engine optimization gives them the chance to compete with multi-million dollar companies, by paying attention to using quality keywords and key phrases that are commonly inserted into searches. The search engine crawlers (the software that scans the web looking for information) then weigh the use of these keywords on a page, along with the relevance of the keywords in relation to the site.
If everything is good and the keywords are relevant and matching a person’s search then the site is likely to come up in the first results on a search page. The higher the rank on the search, the more traffic the website receives. If the website is designed to sell products, then the increase in traffic can only result in more sales.
Search engine optimisation is not usually an overnight process but an ongoing process for every website to consider. Trends change, search terms change and search engines regularly change the algorithms (the math behind their searching).
All of that means that search engine optimization is here to stay and website owners need to pay attention if they want to get to, or stay at the top. In SEO terms, it’s all about being number one.
