Emails have long since replaced most regular mail because it’s cheap and it’s usually incredibly fast. You can send an email and the other person can receive it in seconds, even if they are across the globe.
You will find it much easier to secure a name and email if your site visitor gets something back of value
Opt-in lists have been important for email marketing campaigns for a long time. Email marketers have realised long ago that an opt-in subscriber is valuable to them. Some marketers even claim an opt-in subscriber is as valuable as $1 per name, per month. Doing the math, a list of just 2,500 could bring as much as $2,500 a month. Imagine a list of 20,000 or more.
An opt-in subscriber list is where your visitor has chosen to join your mailing list and given you permission to send them newsletters and promotional materials.
Here’s the simple basics on how to create a targeted, opt-in subscriber list for your email marketing campaigns.
1. Create your website or blog.
It’s easier and easier to create a presence on the Internet. You can choose to register a domain name and host a website or blog, or you can use a free service. Many websites now come with easy to use WYSIWIG editors to make it very easy.
Create a form on your site and ask visitors to complete it. Hint: you need to offer a reward for them, which brings us to step 2.
2. Create something for free
You will find it much easier to secure a name and email if your site visitor gets something back of value. You can offer a report, a screen-saver, an ebook, software, audio or video download or whatever works for your industry and nice.
3. Get writing
Look for magazines and ezines where you can submit articles on your niche topic. Provide a link in your resource box for a sign up email.
4. Let them out
Make sure that you let your visitors know they can always get out of being your subscriber anytime they want and provide the information how in everything you send. Don’t make it difficult to opt-out of you may just find yourself accused of being a spammer and that could destroy your business in no time.
5. Email marketing campaign software
. Choose a good quality mailing list company to help you with your email list management such as GetResponse or AWeber. Both will manage your subscribers as well as provide you with great looking email marketing templates so you can send your newsletter in style.
6. Look for a partner
Consider finding someone with a similar interest and a similar sized list and consider doing a joint venture where you both promote each other’s lists.
Alternatively, try a multiple joint venture give away event and provide a freebie to find new subscribers.
Bonus tip – Look offline
If you know a friendly business, ask them to let you provide simple competition forms for their own customers who can leave their details to win a small prize. You could potentially share the emails if it is clearly stated on the form.
Creating an opt-in list requires time and effort. If you have the funds, consider using a pay per click campaign to promote your list but it is worth the time. The people in your opt-in lists are potential customers or potential repeat customers. They have shown their interest in you and your product by subscribing.
