You have your website ready to capture your target audience and encourage them to purchase your products or services, but how do you get them to find you amongst the millions of websites online?
Promoting a website is the same a promoting any business. It must be done methodically and with purpose, no matter if you are going to pay in time or money.
Free website promotion can be an equally effective way to promote your website online as an alternative to costly pay per click programs. Like all advertising, it involves trail and error, measuring, testing and changing.
Here are a few ideas to get your free advertising campaign started.
Ensure you register with the major search engines and directories. Do a search to see if there are any niche directories for your market or product you should also add your website into.
Find similar websites that accept links and ask for a link exchange. This can help both websites who have an interested target audience.
Consider using free classified ads to boost the promotion of your website. Free ads can be seen by both your targeted audience and others, who may become interested in your products or services.
Consider using banners on reciprocal sites. Banners have lost popularity over the years as website viewers become more immune to noticing them. Banners that look more like text or are vertical have a greater chance of working better.
While not free, make sure you get your domain name and try to get targeted keywords as part of the name. This can be quite important in getting your site rated.
Join forums in your niche and post helpful content. Not only do you get to advertise your site in your signature, but you get to be recognised as an expert when you post advice for others.
Consider posting comments in complimentary blogs. Do a search for “Do Follow” blogs in your niche and post to one or two each day.
Always be on the lookout for new ideas and opportunities to promote and advertise your website for free.

I love to use WordPress to build my money making sites because it is such an easy platform to use and you can do so much with it. The only downside is that you can only work on your sites while online, but for me that isn’t really a problem as i do all my work from my PC which is always connected to the internet. Would you say WP is the best platform to build sites with, or would you recommend something else?

I prefer WordPress too, though I do agree the limitation is having to be online to work on the site.
I enjoy the flexibility of design and the almost infinite number of widgets available to customise any site to any need. WordPress is also quite easy to learn to use, so it’s a good place to start to learn how to blog too.
If you are wanting to build websites and are not interested in blogging, I still prefer using a program such as Dreamweaver.
