Do you have 2001 people you are following on Twitter and are stuck there, not able to follow anyone else?

Twitter has an explanation for this, but it’s vague. They have rules which they don’t care to explain to users very clearly about their 2000 rule.

Simply put, Twitter wants more people to follow you than you are following. That means if you’ve hit their hidden 2001 people you’re following rule, you don’t have enough followers.

How to fix this 2001 stuck problem on Twitter?

Unfollow some people.

You can do it manually with Twitter and that will be slow, or you can use 3rd party programs to help you do it easily. And better still, they’re free.

Try Friend Or Follow – http://friendorfollow.com It will list the people you follow that don’t follow you back. Try sorting by last tweet to see who isn’t adding anything. Unfollow them first.  The disadvantage to Friend or Follow is that it can be slow and you have to unfollow everybody manually via Twitter.

Another option is Twitter Karma – http://dossy.org/twitter/karma This is another free program but you can select people to unfollow with a few clicks of the mouse. Again, there are a choice of ways you can display the people you follow.  Select sort by “last updated” and show “only following”. The disadvantage is this can be a slow program too.

For free programs, both of these are great for keeping up with who you are and are not following.

One that I use all the time is Tweepi (www.tweepi.com). This great little program lets you sort people by all kinds of statistics. It’s good to see who is active on Twitter and who is not. Not only can you easily unfollow people, but it has a really good following tool too. Just enter the Twitter name of someone who interests you, then choose if there is anyone you want to follow from their followers.

Once you are following less people than are following you, then you will be able to resume the climb over 2001 and onwards.
