If you are not promoting yourself, who will?
If you are going to get known, then you need to make a name for yourself. If you don’t, someone else might. So how can you craft a name for yourself that fits who you are and what you represent. Here are a few ideas from Scott Ginsberg’s article:
- Grow the trust. Oprah is the most trusted person in America. She’s also a billionaire. This is not a coincidence. So remember: The amount of money you make is directly proportionate to the number of people who trust you. Are you trustable?
- Nurture the nuts. Inside of you. Inside of your organization. Insanity is the lifeblood of innovation. Crazy is the new sane. Are you willing to strap on the straitjacket and start changing the world?
- Ask the unaskable. Whatever question people assume “can’t be asked” is exactly the questions that should be asked first. And since nobody else is going to pony up the stones to do it, it may as well be you. Are you willing to overcome the diffusion of participation?
- Avoid the always. In your current situation, figure out which move everybody always makes. The action most people always take. Then do the complete opposite. You will win. That’s the cool part: You don’t even have to be that good. Just unexpected. What norm are you wiling to violate?
- Court the irrational. Never overlook the strategy of remaining completely irrational, unreasonable, illogical and insane. Sanity is overrated anyway. How absurd are you willing to be?
- Unlearn the past. Most people have a learning style. Or a learning plan. What about an UN-learning style? What’s your UN-learning plan?
These are just six of the 22 little known ways to make a name for yourself. The other 14 are very interesting too and are written by Scott Ginsberg. Click here to read the rest of his article.
Scott Ginsberg, aka “The Nametag Guy,” is the author of eight books, an international professional speaker, an award-winning blogger and the creator of NametagTV.com. He’s the only person in the world who wears a nametag 24-7 and teaches businesspeople worldwide how to turn approachability into PROFIT-ability. For more info about books, speaking engagements, customized online training programs or to rent Scott’s brain for a one-on-one coaching session, e-mail scott@hellomynameisscott.com.
There are of course lots of more common ways of getting a name for yourself both online and offline.
- Become a local personality. Can you write a column for your local paper? Or have a regular spot on the local radio?
- Do something newsworthy. Be outrageous or unique. Get yourself into the media for doing something that will attract media attention.
- Get involved in your local community. Get known in your community as someone who cares, or someone who makes things happen.
- Blog. Use your blogs for all kinds of information, social comment or just to show off who you are. Blogging on Steroids will jumpstart your blog, show you how to get noticed and make money with your blog.
- Use online video. In the last year, the world of online video exploded. Hollywood got into the game. Now, companies are wide awake to the opportunities for product and brand promotion as well as customer engagement. So how do you want to fit into the new online video universe? The must-have guide, “Get Seen” by Steve Garfield, the “Paul Revere of video blogging,” offers a quick and complete toolkit to get you up to speed on the latest that online video and related media have to offer…

Hi Article Rewriter
Thanks for the comment on the article. There is a lot of information out there on this subject and you will possibly find a lot in your local library too on networking. Specifically it’s called business networking. I can recommend an Australian author by the name of Robyn Henderson to start your search.
