Pinging is one of those terms that are used with blogs and many people have no idea what it means.

A ping service is basically a kind of web crawler that looks at your site when it has new content and indexes it. This means that your new post gets onto these crawled sites and listed.  The later versions of wordpress automatically ping your website. Why is this important? Because it helps with your pageranks, your backlinks and ultimately your traffic.

A little known trick to blog owners is that you can edit the list of ping services that WordPress will notify when you publish your blog post.

Go to the “Settings” menu on the left side of your WordPress administrator panel, then click on “Writing”. At the bottom of this section is a big box for adding ping services. Highlight, copy and paste (CTRL+C, and CTRL+V) the following list into this box and save your changes. (see image below)
