Article writing is regarded as one of the most effective ways to promote a business online and the benefits can be huge, but there are ten tips you can follow to create high quality, original content articles, laser targeted to your niche audience.
- Write something original and useful.
Think of your reader when you’re writing your article and ensure you write something that will help them. Yes, you can write quantity and this has it’s benefits, but quality articles are necessary if you want to get a loyal following. - Don’t expect to become an expert author overnight.
Finding your own voice and style takes some time. The trick is to write, write and write some more. I think of the author Barbara Cartland. She used to write trashy romance novels that sold like hot cakes. She wrote 5,000 words every single day. In an interview I once saw she said that was the secret to her success. She would write a lot but keep a lot less. So, write as often as you can, then work on what you have written. Some will be good, some will not. Keep what is good, store the rest for later ideas. - If you’re not getting high click throughs from your fantastically written articles, your resource box is letting you down. A high quality original article is valuable content for your reader, but in order for you to benefit from all your hard work, you need to spend time on your resource box. Include the first link as a continuation paragraph from the end of your article, then describe yourself and what you do and ask for a click. The click through and ultimately sales are your payment or reward for writing articles of value.
- Article writing is important for boosting page ranking in the search engines. It is also hoped that other website owners will publish your work, increasing your exposure. Ensure that your links in your resource box are working or you lose the benefit of writing the article in the loss of click throughs and in backlinks.
- Expect that someone, somewhere will use your article as a starting point for their own.
Outright plagiarism is illegal and while it happens, it’s not all that common. Finding entire paragraphs of your work is something that does happen. It’s pretty much unavoidable both online and offline. I choose to take it as a compliment someone likes my work that much as there’s little I can do anyway. - Ensure you edit your documents.
Most programs have a spell checker and at the minimum you should use it. A grammar checker is also a great idea. Word has one, but word then puts all kinds of code into documents. If you write your document in word, save it as a text file. I prefer to use TextPad over Word or Notepad. - Spell checking is available in almost every program. Bad spelling can ruin an article. Too many mistakes make you look amateur.
- Choose the right word. Write and right are easy to get right, aren’t they? What about the correct choice of weather and whether, ensure or insure or lose and loose. The latter two are my pet peeves and hardly anyone gets it right. Lose is to miss out, loose is to let something free. For example, you can lose weight, but your tooth is loose.And the same applies to ensure and insure. Ensure is to make sure, insure is to protect. You can ensure a user does something specific on your website by creating great copy, and you can insure your house against robbery.
- Avoid sales and advertorial articles. You know them. Some articles are really advertisements for a product. If they’re clearly identified as a product review, then your reader knows what to expect and will read the article if it is appropriate to them. Articles are helpful to their readers, they contain benefits to the reader and the links are in the resource box.
- Too many links in an article are also off putting to many readers. If you’re writing for your blog or website, keep the links to a minimum, unless you happen to be writing a list type article like the ten best xyz products or similar. Articles loaded up with links can confuse your reader and also destroys the benefits of your resource box. Also, many article directories will not let you put links into your article body, so keep them for your resource box.
Follow these points when writing your articles and you’ll soon find yourself writing high quality original articles regularly. And one last thing, keep writing. The more you write the better you get and article marketing is really a great way to get loyal followers and customers.
