Blogging has been around for quite a long time now. A very long time in technological terms, yet very few people have used blogs as a marketing tool until much more recently. For much of the time, blogging has been used to post technical updates, or as an outlet for teenagers to express themselves.
Savvy marketers discovered blogging a few years ago, as a great way to gain exposure and targeted traffic, as a great way to get free Internet advertising and marketing.
Blogs are extremely inexpensive. The best blog should be under your own domain name and you are free to choose your own blogging platform. Highly recommended is WordPress, simply because a) it’s free and b) Google and the other search engines truly love it.

Once you have a blog, you need to keep making it work for you to attract new targeted visitors to your site. Here are six ways you can get free advertising using your blog.
- You can set your blog to automatically send updates to your clients via your mailing list and send them to your blog. They are easily able to get more information about any new products or services you offer.
- Once you publish your new blog post, use social bookmarking to get your post into as many places as you can. Using a program like OnlyWire lets you register with dozens of social bookmarking sites and post to them all simultaneously, which saves a huge amount of time. It may take a while to set up the pages on all the sites, but it is worth the effort.
- Pinging is another great way to get your blog found too. Use services such as Ping-O-Matic and Ping.fm to tell blog services to crawl your blog for new articles.
- Announce any new blog posts on any related forums where you have membership. You can let people there know you have a blog post they might take an interest in.
- Write on up to date controversial topics. Express your opinion on topics, especially related to your niche or industry. Ask questions and ask people to get involved and make comments You are likely to get a lot of people check your site out.
- Connect with other bloggers in your niche. You may well find that they add you to their favourites list if you publish good content. Start by ‘paying it forward’ and recommend related blogs yourself.
- The biggest key to having a great blog is to post quality content regularly. Daily is best, if you can manage it. A blog post doesn’t have to be long. You can pose a question with background and ask your visitors to comment.
- Try using a ghostwriter or posting PLR content if you are short of time. Set yourself aside some time to write a few posts in one sitting, then queue your articles to be released daily if you know you are going to be busy, or keep them as drafts for when you don’t have time to write something fresh.
- Make sure a link to your blog is at the bottom of every single email you send out. You never know who might be interested.
- Don’t forget about offline opportunities to promote your blog. Traditional advertising works too.
